Customer story · Test automation

A grower-owned food cooperative cuts SAP test cycles from about 20 hours to about 5 with phased test automation

A grower-owned food cooperative runs a complex, multi-plant SAP environment, and every change had to be tested by hand across six or more modules before it could be promoted. TSP automated testing in two phases, growing from 18 to 83 end-to-end scripts with 2,400+ test steps. Test cycles dropped from about 20 hours to about 5.

01 · The challenge

Manual testing that held up every release

Regression testing took significant hours every time SAP was updated or a change was transported across the landscape. End-to-end tests had to be run by hand across six or more SAP modules before any change could be promoted, which created a release bottleneck. Test scripts ranged from 4 to 115 steps, and many critical scenarios needed 40 to 70 sequential steps across modules. Manual execution was slow, error-prone and hard to scale, so teams had to choose between thorough testing and release speed.

02 · The approach

A phased program that mirrors real users

TSP designed a phased test automation program in UiPath. The automated scripts follow the exact steps a user takes in the SAP GUI, so they validate processes the same way a manual walkthrough would.

What TSP delivered

  1. Phase 1

18 core sales and distribution scripts.

  2. Phase 2

65 more scripts across FI, MM, TM, CO and WM.

  3. 20+ business processes

From order to cash and procure to pay to the fixed asset lifecycle, freight optimization and carrier collaboration.

  4. Built to extend

A framework the cooperative can grow with new modules and scenarios as its SAP landscape changes.

03 · The results

15 hours back every test cycle

  • 75% less test execution time, from about 20 hours to about 5 per cycle
  • Automated coverage expanded 4.6x, from 18 scripts to 83 across six SAP modules
  • 15 hours recovered per test cycle, with returns on every regression, upgrade and transport run
  • Phase 2 complete, with the framework ready to extend
